Udaipur — proof that the most unforgettable journeys are a mix of the famous and the hidden.

Udaipur, often called the City of Lakes and the Venice of the East, sits in the Aravalli hills of Rajasthan. Known for its shimmering lakes, palaces, and heritage, it’s one of India’s most romantic destinations — but it’s also a city of surprises, with viewpoints, ghats, and stories waiting beyond the tourist map.

Key Attractions

  • City Palace – The heart of Udaipur’s royal heritage with museums, balconies, and panoramic lake views.

  • Lake Pichola & Boat Rides – Iconic views of City Palace, Jag Mandir, and the Lake Palace.

  • Lake Palace (Taj Lake Palace) – A former royal palace turned luxury hotel floating on Pichola.

  • Jag Mandir – An island palace on Lake Pichola, perfect for a short boat trip.

  • Saheliyon Ki Bari – A charming garden with fountains and lotus pools.

  • Fateh Sagar Lake – Popular for boating and its small island park, Nehru Park.

  • Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh Palace) – Perched on a hilltop with stunning sunset views over Udaipur.

Hidden Gems & Offbeat Spots

  • Bahubali Hills (Badi Lake Viewpoint) – About 12–15 km from Udaipur, a short trek gives panoramic sunrise and sunset views over Badi Lake and the Aravallis.

  • Ambrai Ghat – A peaceful riverside spot for night views of City Palace and Lake Pichola lit up.

  • Gangaur Ghat – A cultural hub often used for festivals, photography, and evening walks.

  • Badi Lake (Jiyan Sagar) – A calm lake with fewer crowds, near Bahubali Hills.

  • Ahar Cenotaphs – Historic royal cremation grounds with ornate cenotaphs (chhatris).

  • Shilpgram – A crafts village showcasing traditional Rajasthani art, dance, and architecture.

  • Vintage Car Museum – A fascinating display of classic cars once owned by the Mewar royal family.

  • Doodh Talai & Karni Mata Ropeway – A small lake with a cable car ride to panoramic viewpoints.

  • Neemach Mata Temple – A hilltop temple with city views, less crowded than Sajjangarh.

Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: October–March. Monsoon (July–September) makes the lakes full and the hills green.

  • How to reach: Maharana Pratap Airport (22 km from city), plus strong rail and road connectivity.

  • Getting around: Auto-rickshaws, taxis, and walking in the old city. Boats are essential for the lake experience.

  • Food to try: Dal Baati Churma, Laal Maas, Mirchi Bada, Ghewar, and Rajasthani thalis. Cafés near Ambrai and Gangaur ghats are great for relaxed evenings.

  • Pro tip: Visit Bahubali Hills at sunrise, and Monsoon Palace at sunset for the best views.

History & Royal Legacy

  • Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II after moving the Mewar capital from Chittorgarh.

  • Udaipur became the seat of the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar, a dynasty known for their resilience and cultural pride.

  • In March 2025, Arvind Singh Mewar, the 76th custodian, passed away. On 2 April 2025, Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar was enthroned as the 77th custodian in a Gaddi Utsav ceremony at City Palace.
